-Cub Swanson vs Jose Aldo/Max Holloway winner
After 10 years of being a WEC/UFC fighter, Cub Swanson has never looked better than he does now at 33 years of age, as the veteran shined in a unanimous decision victory over a very durable Artem Lobov in the main event of UFC Nashville. Extending his current win streak to 4 fights while also taking home his 2nd fight of the night in a row, Cub is without a doubt one of the most exciting top fighters in the featherweight division, showing he can dish out damage just as well as he can take it as he beats opponents at their own game.
With many of the top 10 featherweights booked for fights currently, and Jose Aldo set for a title fight against Max Holloway on May 13th, Swanson finds himself in a good position to be the next challenger for the title due to timing. Having lost to both fighters, with Holloway beating him by submission in 2015 and Jose Aldo’s classic 8-second knockout win over him back in 2009, a rematch with Aldo in particular would be a rematch long awaited by many as there is still the factor of how the fight would play out without a big opening strike.
-Al Iaquinta vs Dustin Poirier/Eddie Alvarez winner
It has been 2 years since Al Iaquinta stepped into the octagon after taking time away from the sport to pursue a real estate career, but you’d never notice he was gone after his flawless first -round knockout victory over longtime UFC veteran Diego Sanchez. Quickly reminding the rest of the division he is still one to look out for, Al finds himself on a 4 fight win streak, putting him right in line for a fight with top 10 competition in his next fight.
With Dustin Poirier and former champion Eddie Alvarez set to do battle in just 2 weeks at UFC 211, the winner of that fight would be a fun matchup for Iaquinta. Alvarez is looking to bounce back after dropping the title to Conor McGregor last year, while Poirier is coming off a win over a gritty Jim Miller.
–John Dodson vs Thomas Almeida
John “The Magician” Dodson is now 2-1 since returning to the bantamweight division after cruising his way to a unanimous decision victory over Eddie Wineland using effective counterpunching through all 3 rounds. Having now bounced back from a 5 round split decision loss to John Lineker back in October, Dodson is still a few fights away from the crowded bantamweight title picture.
A fellow top 10 fighter who just rebounded off a main event loss, Thomas Almeida has no opponent at the very moment, making him a suitable choice for Dodson’s next fight. Almeida is currently 22-1 with his lone loss being to current champion Cody Garbrandt, coming back from that loss with a TKO over Albert Morales back in November. Almeida’s aggressive striking style vs Dodson’s extremely quick counter-striking will surely produce an exciting fight.
-Brandon Moreno vs Tim Elliot
At just 20 years of age, Brandon Moreno’s potential to be a future champion boosts with every fight he’s had so far in the UFC. After spending the majority of the first round defending takedown attempts by his opponent Dustin Ortiz, “The Assassin Baby” was able to work his way back to a standing position time and time again, before eventually dropping Ortiz with a big strike that allowed him to secure the back and sink in the fight ending choke that put his opponent to sleep.
Now 3-0 in the UFC with 2 submissions over top 10 competitors under his belt, Moreno is still in no rush to be put in the title picture at such a young age with the developing he still has to do. Another top 10 fighter who won’t get a title shot in his next couple fights is Tim Elliot, who has just rebounded off his championship title loss with a decision win over Louis Smolka just last week. The timing for a fight between these two is perfect, with the stylistic clash potentially leading to a back and forth grappling affair that is almost guaranteed to please fans.
