Jon Jones vs Alexander Gustafsson II
Jon Jones is king of the UFC Light Heavyweight division once again, after a devastating 3rd round knockout over champion and rival Daniel Cormier in a rematch of their first fight at UFC 182. Finally back on top after the past few years of controversy he has been through, Jones has a 2nd chance at true greatness, as many already believe he is the greatest fighter to ever grace the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. But with becoming champion once again, the target is now back solely on Jones, as there are challenges awaiting on the horizon.
Challenger Alexander Gustafsson was particularly vocal after the fight Saturday night. Taking to his Twitter, Gustafsson challenged Jones to a rematch of their classic fight at UFC 165, where Gustafsson gave Jones his toughest fight yet in a losing effort. Nearly 4 years since their epic clash, and Gustafsson still being at the top of the division following his spectacular knockout over former title challenger Glover Texeira earlier this year, it seems now is the perfect time for them to meet once more and settle the score.
Tyron Woodley vs Robbie Lawler II
Successful in his 3rd title defense, UFC Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley’s reign continues, as he managed to grind out a unanimous decision victory over Demian Maia in a boring 5-round affair. Woodley strictly stuck to his game-plan of throwing counter-punches and defending Maia’s takedown offense, taking minimal to no risks at all in any offense of his own. This attributed greatly to the dissatisfaction of the crowd at the Honda Center, who eventually got bored of just booing and started doing the wave in round 4, as well as waving their cell phone flashlights in the air similar to The Wyatt Family in WWE.
The crowd wasn’t the only one unhappy with Tyron Woodley’s performance (or lack thereof) that night, as Dana White was very vocal about his displeasure with the fight. So much so, he took away what would be Tyron’s biggest fight in returning former champion Georges St. Pierre, opting to give Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping the fight instead. With that fight gone now, the next fight for Tyron Woodley could be a rematch against Robbie Lawler, the very man he took the championship from just last year. Lawler had just rebounded from the loss with a unanimous decision win over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone earlier in the night, so the timing definitely works out for a possible fall matchup between the two.
Cris Cyborg vs Holly Holm
Cris Cyborg can finally call herself a UFC champion. After nearly 8 years of being considered the best female fighter on the planet by many, Cyborg put a beating on a very tough Tonya Evinger before finally getting the stoppage with knee strikes 2 minutes into the 3rd round. With gold around her waist once more, Cyborg has won titles now in the UFC, Invicta, and StrikeForce, something no other female has done. The victory also was Cyborg’s 12th straight victory by TKO, with her last decision win being all the way back in 2008.
Following her victory, there are now talks of pairing up Cris Cyborg with former Bantamweight champion Holly Holm, who is coming off a stunning head kick victory over Bethe Correia earlier in the summer. With both ladies coming out of their recent victories basically injury-free, there is a good chance we could see this fight sooner rather than later. A fight between them would surely be one to look forward to, as Holm would undoubtedly be the best striker Cyborg has faced in the cage. And a win over Holm would further establish Cyborg’s already renowned striking arsenal.
