This Friday will see the launch of the Universal Monster themed cinematic franchise entitled “The Dark Universe” when The Mummy hits screens. Directed by Alex Kurtzman, the film is a reboot of the famous 1932 film starring Boris Karloff, which would later be popularly rebooted in 1999 starring Brendan Fraser. This new rendition will be the starting point for the horror/action universe that also will include Bride of Frankenstein, Creature From The Black Lagoon, and The Invisible Man with plans to also include Van Helming, Wolf Man, Frankenstein, Dracula, Phantom of the Opera, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The premise for the movie reads:
“Though safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.”
The film stars one of Hollywood’s biggest stars in Tom Cruise, with Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Courtney B. Vance, and Russell Crowe playing the famed Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde rounding the supporting cast for the next adventure in The Mummy franchise. Reviews for the film have been divided, but if the future of the Dark Universe interests you with the current line up they have set, this is definitely the movie to see this weekend.
In theaters this week, June 9th!
